After staying in the hustle and bustle of Riga for a couple of nights - me and the person that I was travelling with decide to head to the countryside to see what the rest of Latvia looked like. Arrived in Liepaja after a 4hrs bus ride. My immediate impression was how grey and how run down the town was, it seems like nothing has been developed for the last 30yrs. Got into the town centre, and it wasnt too bad. Got a taxi to take us to the apartment that we rented for 2 nights - been warned that i was a little out of town and it was in an ex soviet military zone. Man - the shock that we got when the taxi drove us in. It was literally a bomb site - and one that has not been cleaned up. We were having thoughts of leaving and heading back to town immediately, but we decide to give it a benefit of a doubt. Our apartment is a nciely refurbished one.... but the surrounding was still pretty shocking. The beach is "near" but it was the Baltic Sea (freezing cold) so, there werent much we could do there. We decide to just stay in for the 2 days to chill and read our books and dare not even wonder out after dark. *scary*
