I have been hearing "Corrinne - Are you nuts?" a lot in the last month or so. This is the response I get when I tell people I want to come to Singapore to look for work and stay here for awhile (at least long enough to see more of Asia).
I used to shrugged and said, "oh well, only time will tell whether I will like it here". I started work this week, worked a full 5 days week, with a daily working hour of 11 hours. Its not even month end yet and I have been told to expect the worst in the coming 2 weeks.
Now I really do understand why people say I am nuts for coming here. Compared to Australia, I would say this is actually slave driving. The people in the office comes to work, not even greeting each other and sit down to start work, not much is said during the whole 10 hrs of the day, except to talk about work. Most of the time, I can only hear the noise of typing on the keyboard. When they finish their work, they quietly leave. I feel like I am in a factory, we are all like robots, we work, we leave and we start all over again the next day.

Why does Asian people work in such environment and endure it? Making a living do not really have to be in such grim conditions is it? Do they really not have other things that they want to do beside staying at work? Do people really not think about self well-being here? *So many questions, so little answers* I am working for a European bank and apparently it is one of the better organisations that promotes Work/Life Balance. I can only imagine what it is like in the other "truely asian" corporations.
There are some plus points of living in Singapore though. I get to eat Roti Chanai and Teh Tarik for $1.80.

Before I started work, I spent 8 days in the South of Vietnam and truly enjoyed it. I really like Vietnam, the people are great, the food is amazing, the place is clean and nice (the French did a good job there). After visiting Ho Chi Minh City, I can say that its one of the cities that I think I can live in and Vietnam is definitely a country that I would love to know more of. Being in Singapore is definitely going to give me more chances of exploring this region. I will endeavour to travel at least once every 2 months. Hopefully I can keep to that goal!
